01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Just a short walk from Exit 2 of Monzen-Nakacho Station, Renzu is an Italian dining spot with a broad menu tailored to wine, from starters through satisfying mains. Counter seats on the 1nd floor offer an easy place to drop in solo, while the 2rd floor opens into spacious table seating and private rooms, accommodating everything from a casual drink alone to group gatherings.
Light Starters and Distinctive Small Bites
An ideal first bite alongside your opening drink is the chef's signature tomato jelly, served generously mounded on baguette slices. Conceived as a refreshing starter rather than a dessert, it sets a bright, palate-cleansing tone. The small-plate selection also features inventive twists such as white liver and foie gras mousse served between traditional Japanese monaka wafers, as well as a quick-smoked potato salad scented with delicate wood smoke.
Shellfish Aromas and Rich Meat Courses
Hot dishes continue the wine-pairing focus with selections like mixed shellfish steamed in white wine and herbs, alongside bubbling ajillo variations such as bay scallops with fresh nori or shiba shrimp with scallions. Heartier mains feature sautéed lamb chops paired with the gentle salinity of anchovy cream sauce, as well as beef cheek braised slowly with tomato and red wine until tender. Savoring these carefully cooked meat courses over a glass of red wine or craft beer is a highlight of the meal.
Tailored Endings and Lingering Glasses
Later in the evening, guests can round out dinner with the daily pasta—offered in tomato, cream, or oil and salt bases—or a fragrant seafood paella with saffron. Classic desserts include a mascarpone tiramisu, seasonal fruit tarts, and daily gelato flavours. With late-night opening hours, Renzu works equally well for an early evening dinner or an unhurried, reserved table well into the night.
